There were many things in my life that were taught wrong. It was drilled into me since childhood to stand straight, knees locked, shoulders back and straight, and back ramrod straight when standing. This was supposed to give grace and poise to one’s body. N.C.C. drilled this even more deeply. But all that it achieved in later life was spondylitis, worn-out knee joints, and a lower back that ached after some time.
Then when I joined Tai Chi, the first thing that my sir taught me was to unlock my knees and loosen my shoulders. So ingrained was locked knees and stiff shoulders in me, that it took time to consciously unlock my knees and loosen my shoulders.
As my forms progressed, I noticed my posture getting corrected, my energy levels increasing, and all the aches that had become part of my life slowly vanishing. Best of all my figure was getting maintained!! Yippee!! I became more aware of my body. I started observing the way I stood, walked, and even sat. I learned to remain alert and focused without stressing my body while remaining relaxed in my stance.
My sir likened my transformation to the straightening of a hose pipe. All my life, it had a bend in it that I was not aware of. This bend interrupted my energy flow and did not let my chakras perform to their max capacity. Learning Tai Chi, I learned to straighten this bend in my body’s hose pipe and let the energy flow into me at full force, revitalizing me.
